Warren Buffett, one of the most successful investors and business leaders in history, often emphasizes the importance of skills and determination in building a successful business. Rose Blumpkin and Jack started their businesses with just $2,500, making them successful enterprises that were eventually sold to Berkshire Hathaway for millions of dollars. Rose Blumpkin, an immigrant from Russia, arrived in the United States in 1917 with limited English and $2,500. Still, through determination and hard work, she built a furniture business that sold to Berkshire Hathaway for $60 million in 1983. Jack, who dropped out of college in 1941, started a company that hires more college graduates each year than any other company in the United States and sold it to Berkshire Hathaway for millions of dollars. She and her husband moved to Omaha, Nebraska, where she began to learn the language through her oldest daughter’s schoolwork.
Over the next 20 years, she saved money by selling used clothing and brought her family to the United States. Finally, in 1937, she had held enough to open her furniture store in Chicago. Despite her inability to read or write, she built a successful business that was eventually sold to Berkshire Hathaway for $60 million in 1983. The Nebraska Furniture Mart business continues to thrive today, with a billion and a half dollars in annual sales and the fourth generation of the family working in the industry.
Jack, another individual highlighted by Buffett, was born in 1922 and dropped out of college in 1941. Unable to serve in the military due to hay fever, he began working various jobs before eventually starting his own business. Despite not finishing college, Jack built a company that hires more college graduates yearly than any other company in the United States. While he turned down an offer to sell his business to Berkshire Hathaway, his success is a testament to the power of determination and hard work in building a successful business.
These stories demonstrate that business success is independent of formal education or a large amount of starting capital. What is crucial is the determination to succeed and the willingness to work hard and learn new skills. As Buffett says, “The best thing a human being can do is to help another human being know more.” By focusing on developing skills and continuously learning, individuals have the potential to build successful businesses regardless of their background or starting point.
